The BSO National Tour roundtables offered an eye-opening look into the realities faced by Black creatives across Canada. Stops in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Halifax, and St. John’s highlighted the immense talent and systemic challenges, including isolation, funding barriers, knowledge gaps, and limited opportunities for upward mobility. Most participants were still at the emerging stage of their careers, with none yet established as senior professionals, underscoring the industry’s urgent need for structural change.
While challenges are significant, the roundtables revealed the resilience and determination of Black creatives. Many are forming collectives, producing innovative work with limited resources, and advocating for better mentorship, funding, and distribution pathways. These conversations underscored the need for stronger community connections, targeted resources, and regional representation to ensure Black voices are empowered and represented in Canada’s screen industries.
The tour is just the beginning of an ongoing conversation about how to build a more inclusive and equitable industry. Explore the full findings in the BSO National 2024 Report to understand the challenges and opportunities uncovered in each region. Tell us what you think.
